The QUANTAMIS FILES

Singer/Songwriter/Guitarist Quantamis Navarathna streams live from Central Texas. By the age of 15, he was writing & performing his own compositions and has continued to play with many bands over the years.

Quantamis' flawless guitar-playing provides a lovely ground for every song in his romantic repertoire. His artistic versatility makes his set a lovely adventure as he shares a most pleasing blend of acoustic folk, soft rock, alternative, Spanish classical & Renaissance romance. Q&A

1. Why are you a singer/songwriter?

I didn't set out to be one, my Grandfather taught me to play guitar and it just came naturally. When i was very young I always enjoyed writing poetry, then it was a natural progression to put my poetry to music

2.  What is your musical background? Do you have a musical family or did you just fall into songwriting all on your own?

I remember when I was very young sitting with my Grandfather, and him teaching me some basics, mostly bluegrass, it was a magical time in my life. My Grandfather played mandolin, piano and guitar and our time together will stay with me forever. I began songwriting as it gave me an outlet to express myself.

3. What sorts of things have you done to improve your songwriting?

I read a lot of literature (though audio tapes as I drive), and it inspires me as well as listening to the great songwriters of our time and time gone past.  Everything I hear and see, helps my imagination and hence my song writing. I have also had some jobs in the past that have touched my soul deeply. One job in particular was very inspirational. The people I crossed paths with touched me deeply.

4. Have you written any songs in the last 12 months? What are you working on now and where do you feel your music is headed?

Oh I am constantly writing songs, I work nights driving truck and this gives me some time to hear what is in my soul. The future is unknown, but I feel that my music is evolving into a more upbeat and rhythmical style. I am going with it to see where it takes me and my music.

5. And finally, what advice would you give anyone looking to follow a similar path to yours?

Follow your heart, follow your soul, cling to that which inspires you, drives you and makes you live.
